Options for Children in Zambia is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the welfare of children and families affected by AIDS in Zambia. As oral health professionals, they work to prevent and treat rampant dental illness while partnering with the communities they serve to overcome health and community development challenges.

Logo

The Options for Children (OFC) logo needed to be flexible to encapsulate the full spectrum of the organization’s increasing initiatives; from oral health to sponsoring local soccer tournaments. Arrows that point up and to the right reinforce what all these initiatives have in common: the goal of increasing the positive life options available to children in Zambia. The logo colors are taken from the Zambian flag.

Website

I created a site outline, layout and content focused on the impact of OFC initiatives and invites visitors to get involved. Call-outs titled.“Voices of Zambia” reinforce the positive impact the organization is having on lives of individuals in Zambia. “Take Action” buttons, located on every page, outline the various ways in which individuals can get involved and stress that even very minimal engagement or donation can make a difference.

Video

A video on the homepage briefly summarizes the organization’s initiatives to date and introduces their next big project: a community birthing center in the Village of Muchila to improve maternal child health. The video was burned to DVD and sent to prospective donors, successfully raising $10,000.

Photography

I traveled to rural Zambia to document some of OFC initiatives including: dental care and education, training of oral health volunteers, microfinance projects for women, support for schools, and support for maternal/child health. Photographs were incorporated into the organization’s website and video.

Evolution/Revolution was a fashion and textiles exhibit at The RISD Museum of Art that brought together the work of contemporary designers who works evoke the spirit of the early Arts and Crafts movement while demonstrating a commitment to innovation in design and new technology.

Logo

The artists featured in this exhibit express concepts of both evolution and revolution; they embrace the evolution of technology, while simultaneously fighting to allow for more craftsmanship in mass projection. As a result the logo blends the two words, evolution and revolution into a single mark; asserting that both methods of change and development are important while simultaneously blurring the point at which one transitions into the other.

Exhibit Brochure

The use of a floral element as a background texture in the exhibit brochure is a reference to the Arts and Crafts Movement and is rotated on every spread to create rhythm throughout the piece. An alternative grid and strong diagonal alignment points are elements of modern design. Text, imagery and graphic shapes are integrated and create activity and movement characteristic of evolution and revolution.

The Active Citizens of Tufts (ACT) Boston unites alumni of Tufts University’s undergraduate, graduate and professional schools through public service opportunities and educational forums for the purpose of building a stronger, healthier and safer greater Boston community. As a founding member of the organization, I worked to craft its mission statement and strategy.

The ACT Boston Logo incorporates an elephant, the mascot of Tufts University, with it’s trunk elevated – a call to action to fellow jumbos. An arrow speaks to the momentum and social progress the organization seeks to create.

Website

ACT Boston needed a website through which it could mobilize and organize Alumni from various Tufts University institutions and generations. Messaging speaks to the concept of active citizenship, a core tenant of any Tufts education. A Service Calendar widget on the homepage is integrated with Eventbrite, enabling the organization to offer online registration, publish events on facebook, manage attendee lists, and email attendees.

Newsletter

E-newsletters are an easy way to report back on the success of past events and solicit registration for future events. Special features such as “Volunteer Spotlight” help to drive traffic back to the organization’s site and keep members engaged. A newsletter sign-up widget embedded in homepage has lead to the steady growth of the organization’s email list.

The Muchila Project is a student-led initiative to inspire and facilitate the fundraising and logistical travel of dental students to rural Africa to provide oral health care to those without access.

Together, the continent of Africa and a toothbrush, immediately communicates that this is a symbol of dental initiative. Blue and white keep the logo clean and positive.

Website

The Muchila Project needed to raise a lot of money and fast. In competition with several different student groups for donations, The Muchila Project needed a unique fundraising model to make them stand out.

We ultimately inspired people to open their wallets by offering smart, fun and tangible rewards that gave donors a personal connection to the mission trip. A donation of $25 or more entitled a donor to an 8”x12” photo print from the project and a postcard mailed from Zambia, signed by a patient. A donation of $100 or more entitled the donor to a photo and hand-made basket or necklace made by the women in Muchila.

The website also included a running fundraising total and countdown clock, list of supporters, and blog to which program participants could post trip updates and photos. Upon trip completion, donors were granted unique usernames and passwords and invited to log-in and select which photos they wanted printed as their donor gift. Options were customized to donor level.

Video

I created a video and pushed it through various social media channels to help spread the word about The Muchila Project. The video establishes a need, introduces the 2010 project participants, and makes a call to action. As a result of the website, video and a social media and email marketing campaign, The Muchila Project raised $9,430 in 28 days.

BeachCache is a full service bead store with a robust selection of beads, wire, chain, charms and supplies, located in Mansfeld, Massachusetts. They have partnered with Options for Children to establish a microfinance project in the Village of Muchila, Zambia enabling its women to earn money producing beads, bracelets, necklaces and baskets. These products are then purchased and re-sold under BeadCache’s Muchila Expressions product line and 100% of the profits from the sale is donated back to Options for Children in Zambia.

Logo

I designed a logo that speaks to the dignity and empowerment of women. The upright posture and gaze of the woman is sophisticated and proud. The head wrap and jewelry are symbols of high-fashion and speak to the quality of craftsmanship.

Jewelry/Basket Tag

The tags are printed with teak-colored ink on an off-white paper as to not compete with the bright and intricate patterns of the hand-crafted jewelry and baskets. The diamond is commonly used in the beaded and woven patterns.

Nourish is a start-up raw organic chocolate company whose chocolate is specially fortified with a powerful blend of phyto-nutrients, vitamins and minerals to protect, regenerate, and strengthen. It is available in three flavors: original superfood, bee pollen-honey and saffron-pepper-nutmeg.

Identity

My concept: Healthy Body, Healthy Spirit links eating enriched chocolate to good health and happiness. Not merely a wordmark, the Nourish identity utilizes layers of ethereal curves to speak to the free flow of a healthy spirit. These curves can adapt to whatever the format, be it a label or box. An elegant serif font, set apart from the curves, is used for the brand name.

Chocolate Boxes

Color is used to differentiate flavors (L to R: saffron-pepper-nutmeg, bee pollen-honey and original superfood), while design and layout remain the same to form a cohesive set.
